What is the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?
The ETA is an electronic permit that authorizes travel to the UK and is part of a larger effort to modernize immigration control. Similar to the ESTA system in the United States, the ETA aims to simplify, speed up and make more secure the process of entering the country. Through this innovation, the British government hopes to intensify the use of technology to improve border security, making it easier to identify travelers even before they arrive.
Who doesn't need ETA?
Citizens with residence, work or study permitsThose who have a visa or authorization to live, work or study in the UK are exempt from applying for the ETA.
British or Irish citizens and dual citizens: If you have British or Irish citizenship, you don't need an ETA. In addition, dual citizenship with a British or Irish passport exempts you from the ETA requirement. You just need to prove your permission using a valid passport from those countries.
Passing through the airport without border control: In the case of transit without going through border control in the UK, the ETA is not necessary. However, it is advisable to check with the airline beforehand.
How to apply and how much does it cost?
Applying for the ETA is simple and can be done online or via the "UK ETA" app. The current cost is 10 pounds, but there are plans to increase this to 16 pounds. The application process is 100% digital, requiring the entry of personal and biometric data, and a short series of questions. Decisions are generally quick, being completed within three days.
It is important to note that, from April 2, 2025, citizens of the European Community non-residents or without any other type of temporary UK visa must also issue the ETA. That's why, Brazilians with dual citizenship European passport holders must also apply for the ETA with one of their citizenships.
