Brazilian Naturalization

Brazilian Naturalization

Brazilian naturalization is the process by which a foreigner or stateless person voluntarily acquires Brazilian nationality, officially joining the country. At the same time, it is important to distinguish naturalness - which refers to the city or region where a person was born - from nationality, which defines belonging to a country. In Brazil, anyone born on national territory acquires original nationality, while naturalization is the means by which immigrants regularize their situation and begin to have full rights as Brazilians.

What is Brazilian naturalization?

Naturalization is the act by which a migrant, who was not born in Brazil, applies to acquire Brazilian nationality. This process requires the interested party to meet the requirements established by law, and can be granted provisionally or definitively, depending on the case. Naturalization can take place on a voluntary basis, guaranteeing foreigners the same civil and social rights as native Brazilians.

Who can apply for Brazilian naturalization?

The naturalization service is aimed at immigrants living in Brazil for an indefinite period. In general, applicants must:

  • Proof of civil capacity;
  • Have continuous residence in the country;
  • Demonstrate command of the Portuguese language;
  • Have no criminal convictions or have been rehabilitated in accordance with the law.

These criteria ensure that the process is fair and that the immigrant is able to integrate into Brazilian society. It is also possible for naturalization to be granted while maintaining the original nationality, if the legislation of the country of origin allows dual nationality.

Types of Brazilian naturalization

Ordinary Naturalization

Aimed at foreigners who wish to naturalize and who meet the following requirements:

  • Have civil capacity;
  • Proof of continuous residence in Brazil for at least 4 years (which can be reduced to 1 year if the naturalized person has a Brazilian child, spouse or partner, or if they demonstrate a significant contribution to the country through their professional, scientific or artistic abilities);
  • Communicate in Portuguese;
  • No criminal convictions.

Extraordinary Naturalization

Granted to people who have lived in Brazil for more than 15 years without interruption and have no criminal record. This modality aims to recognize the immigrant's long stay and integration into the country.

Provisional naturalization and conversion to permanent naturalization

Aimed at immigrant children and adolescents who settled in Brazil before reaching the age of 10. This modality is requested through the legal representative and can be converted into definitive naturalization upon express request within two years of reaching the age of majority, provided that the legal requirements are met.

How to apply for Brazilian naturalization

To start the process, the applicant must book an appointment with the Federal Police. During the appointment, personal and biometric data will be collected, and the immigrant must present all the required documentation. It is essential to follow the process through the official channels, ensuring that all stages are completed correctly.

In addition, it is recommended that those interested consult the official website of the Federal Government to check the specific conditions and forms required for each type of naturalization, whether ordinary, extraordinary or provisional.
